Fundraising for Universities: Exploring Options

17-18 February 2006
Istanbul Technical University, Turkey

While in the US and increasingly in the UK fund raising is part of life for university leaders it is not yet part of the culture in most continental European institutions. This is partly due to national legislation which does not fiscally or otherwise reward donations and similar financial transfers to educational institutions. It is also a matter of culture where universities have long been used to public funding and struggle to diversify their revenue through other channels.

In the usual case based format of the series this workshop looked at diverse forms of fundraising and its management taking the diverse European legal context into account. Participants shared experience on:

  • How to develop an appropriate fundraising strategy
  • What are basic prerequisites for effective fund raising for an HEI
  • How to build a fundraising competence and culture in the institution

The workshop took place at Istanbul Technical University which has substantial fundraising experience and also shared its case. Other cases highlighted different aspects of fundraising, e.g., working with internal or external fundraisers, the role of alumni and the use of specialised agencies. EUA was particularly honoured that the event was opened by the former President of the Turkish Republic, Suleyman Demirel, who is one of the most important promoters of education and research in the country.

The audience consisted of university leaders who decide on and manage their institution’s fundraising activities: Rectors, vice–rectors for external affairs, heads of administration, directors of fundraising and development.
